Booming New Cannabis Industry Faces an Abundance of Hurdles

By Dr. Mercola

On July 1, 2015, Oregon became the fourth state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. In Colorado, recreational pot has been legal since 2012 and medical marijuana since 2001. About half the states in the country now permit the use of medical marijuana.

With state laws changing almost monthly, America's appetite for marijuana is growing — leaving the weed business booming. An estimated 33 million Americans used pot in 2013, up nearly one-third from a decade ago.

In the midst of this "marijuana gold rush," growers eagerly struggle to meet demand, while facing the challenges of operating a legal drug business in a world where overriding laws still regard pot as illegal, and the changes haven't trickled up.

The CNBC special "Marijuana Country: The Cannabis Boom" takes a look at the challenges the new pot industry has caused in Colorado, as well as the legal quagmire related to marijuana crossing state lines.

What happens in Colorado won't stay in Colorado — they are paving the way for the rest of us in this brave new world of legal weed. It's just a matter of time before other states run into the same legal, ethical, and public health concerns.

Marijuana Bud May Be Colorado's Unofficial State Flower

Colorado is now home to more than 500 marijuana stores. One of the largest, Medicine Man, turns out more than 120 pounds per week and has dubbed itself "The Costco of the Grow." Their grow houses cultivate more than 70 different varieties of cannabis.

In its first year, Colorado's legal pot sales topped half a billion dollars and generated $50 million in taxes for the state.

Colorado has become a major pot exporter, supplying states in which pot remains illegal. Only 40 percent of sales are to Colorado residents — the other 60 percent are to tourists.

"Marijuana tourism"1 is creating significant discord between Colorado and its neighboring states. In fact, Nebraska and Oklahoma are suing Colorado in the US Supreme Court, arguing they've suffered "direct and significant harm" from pot's crossing the borders.

The Marijuana Underground Is Alive and Well

You might think legalization would have put an end to underground pot sales in Colorado, but actually the opposite is true — the black market is booming. In Colorado, 40 percent is still grown and sold illegally, and recent signs suggest the same may be true for Washington State.2

But why? In the eyes of many seasoned weed users, the marijuana underground offers several advantages, not the least of which is economics.

In licensed Colorado dispensaries, taxes on marijuana are as high as 36 percent, and there are limits on how much you can purchase. In the featured documentary, buyers report they can buy weed illegally for one-third of the price charged in dispensaries with one phone call, day or night... no tax, no limit.

How do sellers get away with it? They claim to offer their products for a "donation," "gift," or "exchange." Some are selling through the mail via sites like Craigslist. A few illegal wholesalers and brokers even manage to sell their goods to licensed dispensaries.

Marijuana Businesses Struggling All the Way to the Bank

Selling marijuana may be legal in your state, but as far as the banks are concerned, any money exchanged is illegal drug money and they won't touch it.

American marijuana businesses are forced to deal only in cash because banks refuse to bankroll them, in fear of the repercussions from federal drug trafficking laws. According to the National Cannabis Industry Association, this is the most significant problem the industry faces at present.3

The proliferation of cash from marijuana sales makes the 2,000 retail shops and medical dispensaries irresistible targets for criminals, as well as being risky for employees and vendors, who must be paid in cash.

These problems will likely grow unless Congress steps in and changes federal drug and drug-trafficking laws. The flip side is that some companies are actually benefitting from this cash-and-carry system — security services and safe manufacturers are doing just fine.

Film Covers the Many Dangers of the Cheap Meat Industry

For several decades, Americans have enjoyed paying low prices for meat at the grocery store. Unfortunately, many are unaware of the hidden costs of "cheap meat"—and when you add them up, they are substantial.

The manner in which most commercial livestock is raised is wasteful of precious resources and destructive to the environment, in some ways irreparably. In addition to the broader ecosystem, people and wildlife have been paying dearly with their health.

The documentary "Meat of the Matter" traces the trail of destruction left by the commercial meat industry.

On the brighter side, a new breed of ranchers is leading the meat revolution by returning to traditional styles of animal husbandry, farming in a manner that actually supports and restores the earth as opposed to recklessly using it up.

The US Meat Racket

Most meat in the US (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, etc.) is raised in confined animal feeding operations, or CAFOs. It's a corporate-controlled system characterized by large-scale, centralized, low profit-margin production, processing and distribution systems.

Food production has been built around efficiency—producing more for less. Worldwide, tens of billions of animals are crammed into feedlots, where they're tortured by unhealthy, unsanitary, and cruel conditions.

This is the "cheapest" way to raise meat, for the largest profits. Making matters worse, the government subsidizes these operations, shrewdly fleecing American taxpayers in order to keep the meat monopoly going.

Smaller American ranchers wishing to offer traditionally raised grass-fed meats, who care about quality and environmental impact, face higher operational costs and must charge a premium for their product.

Most of the grass-fed beef sold in the US—as much as 85 percent—is actually imported from Australia and New Zealand because those countries still have plentiful grasslands, as well as a climate that permits year-round grazing. As a result, Australian ranchers can sell their meat for less than American rancher.

Vitamin D Can Save You from Diabetes and Dementia

By Dr. Mercola

Do you know your vitamin D level? If not, a simple blood test called 25(OH)D, or 25-hydroxyvitamin D, can reveal your levels and give you incredible insight into your potential future risk of disease.

Low vitamin D levels are widely known to harm your bones, leading them to become thin, brittle, soft, or misshapen. But a lack of vitamin D does not only impact your bones. Far from it

.

You see, vitamin D isn’t a vitamin at all. It’s a steroid hormone that influences virtually every cell in your body. From your heart to your brain to your immune system, maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is incredibly important.

It’s also incredibly easy, because the best way to get vitamin D is to have regular exposure to the sun or a high-quality tanning bed. If those aren’t options, you can take vitamin D3 orally (along with some synergistic nutrients, which I’ll discuss below). It’s one of the least expensive vitamin supplements…

America's Most Sleep-Deprived Cities

By Dr. Mercola

Earlier this year, the Labor Statistics Bureau released data that stated Americans get an average of nearly nine hours of sleep per night. This seems high, considering most other surveys suggest Americans are largely sleep deprived.

And if the data relied on Americans’ notoriously inaccurate self-reporting their sleep time each night, it is seriously flawed. Most people calculate their sleep time by counting the hours from the time they went to bed until they wake up in the morning.

Using that approach does not actually factor the time it takes to fall asleep or the number of times one awakens every night. So this estimate will typically be off by 30-60 minutes or more. I am speaking from personal experience having used the Jawbone UP24 since the more accurate Zeo sleep-monitoring system went out of business.

When you use a fitness-tracking wristband device such as Jawbone UP or any of the many other similar products on the market, you can get a much more accurate picture of how much you’re actually sleeping.

Your Microbiome May Be Key Factor Determining Your Health and Longevity

By Dr. Mercola

Mounting research suggests that your microbiome—colonies of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes living in your gut—may be one of the preeminent factors determining your health and longevity.

Feeding health-promoting gut bacteria with a healthy diet, avoiding hospitals (which are hotbeds for drug-resistant bacteria), and boycotting processed foods and animal foods raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs)—both of which tend to have an adverse effect on your microbiome—may be keystone strategies for longevity.

Sleep Apnea: This Sleeping Habit Can Destroy Your Health

Sleep Problems May Complicate Many Illnesses

Dr. Strauss is absolutely passionate about what he does. After devouring a textbook on dental occlusion; something that would have put most people to sleep, he decided he wanted to learn more, which led him to study with Dr. Charles Stewart, known as the 'father of gnathology' (the study of the masticatory system, relating to the movement of your jaw).

He also studied with Stan Tillman, who wrote textbooks on crowns and bridges used in dental school, and his interest in prevention led him to join the Academy of Preventive Dentistry.

His journey to becoming an expert on sleep apnea began in 1988, when he took a class with Tom Meade, the inventor of an anti-snoring appliance called the Snore Guard.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Apnea is a Greek word that means "breathe." Sleep apnea is the inability to breathe properly, or the limitation of breath or breathing, during sleep.

There are three general types of apnea described in the literature:

  1. Central apnea, which typically relates to your diaphragm and chest wall and an inability to properly pull air in
  2. Obstructive apnea, which relates to an obstruction of your airway that begins in your nose and ends in your lungs
  3. Mixed apnea is a combination of both
  4.

Obstructive sleep apnea consists of the frequent collapse of the airway during sleep, making it difficult for victims to breathe for periods lasting as long as 10 seconds. Those with a severe form of the disorder have at least 30 disruptions per hour. Not only do these breathing disruptions interfere with sleep, leaving you unusually tired the next day, it also reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood, which can impair the function of internal organs and/or exacerbate other health conditions you may have.

Essential Oils Support Physical and Emotional Well-Being

By Dr. Mercola

Your sense of smell is your most primal sense and exerts surprising influence over your thoughts, emotions, moods, memories, and behaviors. Scents are experienced long before words.

This is why it's nearly impossible to describe them with language. Olfaction is different from your other senses, processed through different pathways in your brain.

For other sensations such as sounds and visual images, sensory input is delivered straight to your thalamus, which you can think of as "the big switchboard" in your head. From there, data goes out to your primary sensory cortices.

But smells are different. Before reaching your thalamus, they first wind their way through other regions of your brain, including areas controlling memory and emotion. So with scents, you have all this extra processing even before you have conscious awareness of the scent.

Investigation Finds Serious Flaws in Study That Served as Basis for Guideline Suspected of Killing Nearly a Million Europeans

By Dr. Mercola

Investigations assessing the prevalence of scientific fraud and/or its impact show that the problem is widespread and serious—to the point of making most of "science-based" medicine a genuine joke.

Conflict of interest is another pervasive problem that threatens the integrity and believability of most studies. We've been repeatedly faced with study findings that are clearly tainted with industry bias.

The soda industry's study finding that drinking diet soda makes you lose more weight than drinking no soda at all is just one of the most recent examples. It blatantly contradicts a massive body of research demonstrating that artificial sweeteners disrupt your body's metabolism and lead to greater weight gain than regular sugar.

6 Reasons to Drink Coffee Before Your Workout

If you're like many people, you may start your day with a cup of coffee. According to Health Magazine,1 about half of American adults stick to this daily ritual, despite conventional warnings that coffee might not be all that good for you.

My own understanding of coffee's virtues and risks was greatly enhanced by my 2011 interview with Ori Hofmekler, author of The Warrior Diet and Unlocking the Muscle Gene, who has researched coffee extensively.

Ori explained how coffe can't overdo it, when consumed in the right way, can in fact be used as a health and fitness enhancing tool. There are caveats, however, and there are also points of contention, where the details still have not quite been teased out.

Despite that, it is possible to draw up some general guidelines that will allow you to enjoy your coffee with minimal risk. You may even be able to reap valuable benefits from your habit, provided you're willing to make some slight alterations to how you drink it.

Ori specifically pointed out the benefits coffee might have when consumed prior to working out, and this is also the focus of the featured article.

Benefits of Beets

Beets are an ancient, prehistoric food that grew naturally along coastlines in North Africa, Asia, and Europe. Originally, it was the beet greens that were consumed; the sweet red beet root that most people think of as a "beet" today wasn't cultivated until the era of ancient Rome.1

By the 19th century, however, the natural sweetness of beets came to be appreciated and beets began to be used as a source of sugar (reportedly, Napoleon was responsible for declaring that beets be used as a primary source of sugar after the British restricted access to sugar cane).2

Today, sugar beets (unfortunately often genetically modified) are a common raw material used for the production of sugar, but many people are missing out on including them in whole form in their regular diet.

There's good reason to do so, in fact, as beets contain a variety of unique health-boosting nutrients that you may not be getting elsewhere. Plus, they're delicious!

On Your Mark, Get Set, Grow: A Guide To Speedy Vegetables

If you're a gardener, you know that the act of gardening is just as rewarding as the literal fruits of your labor. Monty Don, a TV presenter and garden writer, attributes the well-being of gardeners to the "recharging" you get from sticking your hands in the soil and spending time outdoors in nature.1

Still, interest in gardening is skyrocketing, not only because of its therapeutic nature but also because people are growing increasingly concerned about the quality of their food and where it comes from.

Alas, many are turning back toward the traditional practice of growing their own food right in their own backyards (or in some cases on rooftops, patios, and any other nook and cranny one might find).

In the latter case, when food is your motivating factor for planting a garden, it sure would be nice to be able to plant your seeds one day and harvest ripe vegetables the next. Nature doesn't work that way, of course, but there are some tricks to growing vegetables faster…

On the other hand, carefully chosen healthful foods can have the opposite effect, working to boost your spirits and even lessen anxiety. A proper diet may not only help you feel calmer but can even lessen the damage that stress does to your body.
